Pricing

topic posted Mon, October 3, 2005 - 2:13 PM by  Renata
I have just recently moved back to the web design/development field after a long absence to do other things...

I can't fully recall how to price sites or even what to ask for (I'm in NYC). I am currently trying to price a site I am mainly doing "grunt work" for. (In other words, creating the look (layout's done so images, color, etc), and working it up in HTML. Nothing real fancy. There is 36 pages that will need to be done but mostly likely the site will be using server side includes (PHP) or some sort of template.

Thoughts?
Thanks in advance

I only bill by the hour, since software development is an indefinite art. I charge $85/hr and most folks I know charge about the same.

      "I charge $85/hr"

      wow?

for straight up front end presentational programming? XHTML/CSS/PHP?

you're in NY? I'm in Toronto and I get gasps when I charge $45ph.

I'm in the Bay Area and there's a lot of competition here, for sure.

I charge $85/hr for whatever I'm doing relating to web work, whether PHP/MySQL programming, HTML coding, or designing.

I used to charge less, but found that clients would continually come back with niggly, stupid changes forever because it didn't cost them much. Now, they only change their minds when it's important and they tend to be much better about being organized from the beginning, since they can see their $$$ floating away quickly if they aren't.

Also, charging a lot weeds out the less desirable clients really fast. The ones remaining are obviously looking for either someone who knows their shit and/or very high quality.

First rule I learned in business: the more you charge, the more you know. (And there is _never_ a doubt about my quality.) :-)

So in terms of time for the site 36 pgs, 2 design revisions...100 hours?

It's tough to say without knowing anything about the site. My gut reaction, though, is that anything that has 36 pages (or more) would benefit greatly from a database-driven back end, which can also save a lot of time.

So in terms of time... I am afriad to underbid or even overbid it.

So 36 pages with 2 allowed revisions in design... is 100 hours unreasonable?

I feel silly for asking all this but it's really been quite sometime since I have done this.
