Any feelings on them? I should probably dig up some info on them sometime, because I'm not actually convinced that they're useful.

Any other fun new unsupported standards that you're looking forward to messing with? I'll tell you I await with great joy the full support of CSS's min-height and max-height commands. And child selectors. There also still seem to be rendering errors in some browsers of hover action on things other than a tags. There's some crazy CSS being made with the hover attribute.

I'm mainly up on CSS, but would love to hear about the latest innovations in other realms (especially accessible flash). If you haven't seen "cutting edge CSS" yet, here's some good examples:

The slideshow found here [ http://www.land-la.com/new/projects/design/commercial/maxstudio/maxstudio.html ] is a SWF file that pulls from a separate XML. The XML contains a path, a list of images, and potentially a caption for each one, but as far as I can tell, no formatting options. LAND didn't mind, but I'm thinking about using a Flash slideshow in my portfolio - I want the text to be easily found for SEO, and I want to be able to format it.

1) Is there a way to format text within the XML <caption> tag (basics like paragraph breaks, bold, italic, etc.)?

2) Is it possible to tell the browser to display different (HTML) text when different images load (in the SWF)?

3) Am I making this too complicated / is there a simple solution?

PROBLEM recap: I want valid, searchable, formatable captions that are in sync with the images as they load.

4) Even better (& *ideally*): Is there a way to load high-quality graphics (say, 25) quickly in a professional-looking, customizable slideshow, while discouraging image theft (i.e., can't just ctrl-click, hidden from Google images), being standards-compliant and taking only a few development hours?

Any suggestions?

Hello,

Been lurking a while, but this is my first post to the group.

Just back into web application development after a short (three year) hiatus and am curious about domain registrars. When I started web stuff 10 year ago, there were but a couple registrars around and I went with Network solutions for my personal site, as well as all my business sites. So I am comfortable with how they work, and have been pleased with the service.

Now there are so many more! I have dealt with a few as support person (during my hiatus I was a systems admin), and was less than pleased with the way registrars such as GoDaddy worked, but that could have been in part due t the fact that I was trying to support USERS who had done silly things like forgotten their logins and passwd to the registrar, set up the DNS info for their domains wrong, etc.

So, I need to register a couple new domains, and was planning to go back to Network Solutions, but I have also noticed there are plenty of other ways to get my domain registered, and for so much cheaper too. However, after my past experience with GoDaddy, CheapNames, and even my own hosting providing, I am doubtful that I will be happy with the level of control I get over my domain name. I LIKE owning my domain in full and being in complete charge of making sure DNS gets updated, ensuring that the domain gets renewed in a timely fashion (another problem we had with using a registrar that was not network Solutions).

So my question is, WHY would I switch to something other than Network Solutions? I look forward to your input!

I can't fully recall how to price sites or even what to ask for (I'm in NYC). I am currently trying to price a site I am mainly doing "grunt work" for. (In other words, creating the look (layout's done so images, color, etc), and working it up in HTML. Nothing real fancy. There is 36 pages that will need to be done but mostly likely the site will be using server side includes (PHP) or some sort of template.

No as much as i hate MS's older proprietary box model (ie5.x) the padding rendering makes more sense.

My problem is that i think that a box's dimensions should be completely independent of its padding. It gives you more control and also eliminates the need to apply a margin or padding to elements within that box in many cases, or the need to "go nesting crazy!"... I dont understand why, when creating the spec, they decided to ADD the padding dimensions to the box instead of making them act as an independent inner margin. This logic just dosent make sense to me! Maybe its becuase im from a print background and am used to defining an inset on a text box for control... i dunno.

What are your thoughts on it?

A little background: we'll be releasing a new feature very soon -- the ability for users to select from a library of stylesheets to apply to their own profiles. What we'd like to do is showcase the design skills of our users, by featuring user-created styles in our style library.

If you know your way around Photoshop, and are familiar with designing for CSS-driven pages, head over to the Profile Design Contest tribe, where you'll find more information about entering:

http://profiledesign.tribe.net/

Send in your concepts by April 1st, 2005, and we'll pick the best ones to add to the style library. This is a great opportunity to get exposure if you're a designer, since every tribe.net user will see the style library page. If selected, your design will be credited with your name (which will be linked to your user profile). The top design will be awarded an iPod shuffle.

If you want the basics about the contest, I've also posted a listing here:

The CERT warning said Internet Explorer users can protect themselves by turning off the "javascript" function in their browsers. Javascript is a computer language often used in building Web sites. The attack takes advantage of two recently discovered security flaws in Internet Explorer. Microsoft released a patch in April to fix one of the security holes; the company is still working on a patch for the other flaw, which security researchers publicly detailed less than two weeks ago.

CERT recommends that Internet Explorer users consider different browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Netscape Communicator or Opera. For people who continue to use Internet Explorer, CERT and Microsoft recommend setting the browser's security setting to "high." "

So here's the score. I will be opening a Digital Arts Gallery in North East England and I am seeking interested artists wanting to showcase their work in a gallery setting. I will be taking applications. Simply email me p_ixepusher@yahoo.co.uk with your URL or some zipped examples of your works.

Should you be selected, you will be part of a new wave of art showcasing. Selected artist will have the opportunity to display their works on a variety of projectors and monitors in the gallery. You will have your own space in other words. This is not a web gallery by any means. It is the first of its kind. An art gallery with the sole purpose of selling and showing off digital artists. No more is the need for a website not one but your friends can access. You will be displaying your art to interested Art Directors and the public alike.

Please not this is only for artists who produce work from their computers. I will not be accepting traditional art as this is not the purpose of the gallery.

In other news, you can join DIGITAL LUCIDITY tribe to also showcase your artwork on tribe. Just add your pieces in the photo section. We have a growing selection of awsome artists and its growing every day.
